Every day is different when you’re working in highway construction and road infrastructure!
Work Environment *
Much of the work is done outside, maintaining highways, municipal and rural roads, airport runways, and rights-of-way.
Job Outlook *
The projeted employment increase for highway mainteance workers is 4% each year, on average, in New Hampshire and 6% nationwide until 2028.
Highways, bridges and roads are critical to our infrastructure. Having a skilled workforce of people who build and maintain them is also critical. Unfortunately the workforce is aging and there are not enough interested people to fill the positions. We need to change this, and soon.
If you like working outside and working with your hands, then this is an excellent career path to consider. Everyday is different and projects vary from snow removal and road maintenance to bridgework and heavy machine operating.
Careers you can find within a municipal highway department or the State of New Hampshire Department of Transportation range from bridge engineers and bridge inspectors to highway maintainers and traffic signal technicians.
